LADY BIRD LAKE HIKING TRIAL RESTROOMS   The project is a trial restroom located in Austin, Texas got completed in 2007. The project is the first restroom built in the park in over 30 years by the Trial foundation. The restroom was concieved as a sculpture in the park, a dynamic object along active trails.  This project used CORTEN steel ( a weathering steel with natural patina ) for its construction. These pre rusted steel plates are arranged in circular shape forming the walls of the toilet. There were totally 49 different panels that were embedded into the ground. Each panel is 2 cm thick and varies in height to create irregular profile. The plates are staggered in plan to allow the pass of light and ventilation. These plates were free standing which was supported only in the footing. The foundation consists of shallow concrete footing. Concrete flooring inside and an orange hued crushed granite exterior. Plumbing fixtures are made from heavy duty stainless steel to...

HALFTECTURE O The project halftecture is located in Chuo ward, Japan in a area of  580 sqm . This project is built by Shuhei Endo architects at 2005.  The project halftecture is a series of  3 public restrooms  planned at the important landmark for use by local residents and tourists. The architect named it halftecture because he wanted to involve the outdoor in the indoor and hence the project is not completely closed. Entrances to the building is not defined. Space above the toilet is open to allow free flow of air.  The structure is constructed with weathering steel plates.  Corten steel  (  steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting, and form a stable rust like appearance after several years of exposure to the weather  )  is used as a major material in the construction. To add an element of contrast, the booths were done with porcelain, stone, and metal finishes.  The project consists of a sin...

12/September / 2020 Heatherwick Artists’ Studios in Aberystwyth, UK   Today’s session was about more case studies that dealt with steel structures. This has its basis on Stainless Steel structure and Polyurethane Foam. Never knew a spray could do this big, a difference in the play of form and structure in a built entity.   Design Intent Art Studio split into 8 smaller studios for better congregation and a way of approach to the design. To provide low cost facilities for start-up art organisations. This constraint brought such an innovation in the form of the structure. Aesthetics - In effort to respect the character of the wooded site, the program was broken down to 8 smaller studios and were placed among the woods. The structure was designed to be like a canopy between the other trees. The design was based on this concept.   Materials and Technical Details    The requirements of the material were it had to be thin, durable and resistant to we...

04/ September / 2020     Today’s session was about referring to some interesting examples where steel was used as a major material for construction. Although these examples were from abroad, they were of use because of similar context, based on coastal and semi-tropical climate. This gave an introduction for a lot of different materials (other ways of using steel in buildings other than the usual ones) and different ways to tackle the climate with steel.  St. Andrews Beach House, Australia   Intent - A vacation place for a stay away from busy routine. The construction is primarily based on oxidised mild steel. The other materials used in the construction are as follows: - Advantage of Oxidisation - It forms a layer on top of the steel which reduces the rusting tendency of steel Advantage of Mild Steel - It is cheap, it undergoes carburisation which optimises the amount of carbon to withstand the weather. Double-layer corrugated fiberglass - high pack...
