CASE STUDY 1 AND 2
LADY BIRD LAKE HIKING TRIAL RESTROOMS
The project is a trial restroom located in Austin, Texas got completed in 2007. The project is the first restroom built in the park in over 30 years by the Trial foundation. The restroom was concieved as a sculpture in the park, a dynamic object along active trails.
This project used CORTEN steel ( a weathering steel with natural patina ) for its construction. These pre rusted steel plates are arranged in circular shape forming the walls of the toilet. There were totally 49 different panels that were embedded into the ground. Each panel is 2 cm thick and varies in height to create irregular profile. The plates are staggered in plan to allow the pass of light and ventilation. These plates were free standing which was supported only in the footing. The foundation consists of shallow concrete footing.
Concrete flooring inside and an orange hued crushed granite exterior.
Plumbing fixtures are made from heavy duty stainless steel to avoid wear and tear. There is no artificial light or mechanical ventilation as the cost of construction was kept at minimum.
