WEATHER CONDITIONS AFFECTING STEEL
WEATHER CONDITIONS AFFECTING STEEL Steel becomes brittle during colder weather conditions due to the presence of more carbon in it. During summer, it expands. Rusting or corrosion of structural steel is a process that happens due to the presence of moisture or water content in air i.e. humidity. The iron in steel is oxidized to produce rust. The metal corrodes when a chemical reaction takes place involving oxygen and water. Rusting is less likely to occur if the metal is kept in hot climatic conditions or in a dry place where there’s less moisture content. On a contradicting note, the metal might rust at a faster rate if the metal is exposed to high heat or during summer when there’s extreme amount of heat generated. Increased humidity leads to increased rust. In snow regions, the roads are treated with a certain amount of salt and deicing substances are also used simultaneously. Roads that are covered with ice increase the rate of speed of rust formation. Rains gener...
