CASE STUDY 5 AND 6
HALFTECTURE O
The project halftecture is located in Chuo ward, Japan in a area of 580 sqm. This project is built by Shuhei Endo architects at 2005.
The project halftecture is a series of 3 public restrooms planned at the important landmark for use by local residents and tourists. The architect named it halftecture because he wanted to involve the outdoor in the indoor and hence the project is not completely closed. Entrances to the building is not defined. Space above the toilet is open to allow free flow of air.
The structure is constructed with weathering steel plates. Corten steel ( steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting, and form a stable rust like appearance after several years of exposure to the weather ) is used as a major material in the construction. To add an element of contrast, the booths were done with porcelain, stone, and metal finishes.
The project consists of a single flat sheet made of anti corrosive steel. Truss shaped structural walls composed of 25mm thick steel sheet have been set at the right and left ends, and a catenary curve made of 16mm thick steel spans the 20m gap between these support points.
ARTIST'S STUDIO IN ABERYSTWYTH
Located in London, the projects covers the design of 16 artists' studios built as a part of its art university complex. The design aim is to finish the project in low cost and make the project sustainable.
The studios are arranged in pairs linearly A glazed wedge carved out from the couple building, provides necessary light and ventilation. A horizontal slit glazed opening also allows for the visual connection between outdoor and indoor.
An ultra thin sheet of rolled stainless steel is used which has been crumples and loosely pressed pressed onto the timber frame, giving it a futuristic appearance. Since low cost construction was considered, the steel chosen was rolled to a thickness of just 0.127mm. Two layers of CFC free foam were sprayed onto inside the sheets to brace the structure and also provides thermal insulation.
