 The surrounding environment has always had an impact on any types of material we use in construction

Major factors that affect the steel are 

  • Temperature
  • Humidity 
  • Wind

Temperature: Thermal expansion can happen in high temperature and electrical resistance of steel reduces in low temperature

Humidity: Rust and corrosion is the major effect of humidity on steel

Wind: Shape deformation and can react with salt 

Preventive measures to be done to prevent damage:

  • Galvanizing: Applying a coat of zinc to protect rusting
  • Chromium coating: Applying a layer of chromium oxide
  • Quality of coating should be ensured
  • Usage of selected type of steels in outer and inner surface of building 
  • Design modifications can be done based on the usage
