Today's session was more properties of Steel and similar metals for learning more details and workability with different ways and methods: -
Galvanic Action
Higher end is anode and at the lower end is th cathode. When current is passed through a combination of metals, the one at the higher end will corrode first.
Co-efficient of thermal expansion
Charge/length of materials/degree of change in temperature
Specific Gravity
Density of substance/ Density of water
Tensile/Yield strength
Tensile strength is the maximum ability of the metal to withold stress, will show necking and will fail at a point called fracture.
Tield strngth is the maximum ability of the metal to exhibit elasticity after which it cannot undergo deformation and will become plastic.
Reflectivity
p(y)=Gr(y)/Gi(y)
Where P is the reflectivity, Y is the wavelegth, Gr is reflecting radiation, Gi is the incident radiation
Oil Canning
An elastic buldging on metallic sheets, especially if it used for lare spans. Its also called stress wrinkling and is characterised by a pop sound.
How to prevent oil canning - by the following ways -
- Design - choice of materials
- Thicker - higher quality
- Light color and less glossy
- Backer rod - at a regular interval
- Skilled workers
Welding / Soldering
It can support structures with less strength only. It is done using semi-automated tool, argon gas and TIG-Tungsten Inert Gas
Joining
- Rivet
- Nut and Bolt
- Pin
Mechanical Fasteners
To create non permanent joints and to connect 2/ more joints together.
Classification of Steel
Tools
Carbon
- Medium carbon steel - 0.25%-0.6%
- High/hard carbon steel - 0.6-1.5%
- Low / mild steel - 0 - 0.25% carbon content
Alloy - Adding appropriate elements to improve the desired quality of steel.
Stainless Steel
- Ferretic
- Martenestic
- Austenitic
- Duplex Stainless Steel
- PH- Precipitaion Hardening
