 St. Andrews Beach House


LOCATION - Victoria, Australia

Site conditions -


elevated site

Exposed to the ocean

In the winter - to gale force winds



Spatial organisation -


2 elements;

  • Open dining/living space

  • Compartments bedrooms and a study



Spaces connecting these two elementary -

  • A deck

  • An attic connecting from above





Planning -


- follows an idealized geometric order

- The building's elevated position allows air flow throughout.

- Internal environment- Characteristics of the Australian outback 

homestead resembled in this project:

The sunroom, the breezeway and the sleep-out are reinterpreted

 while intensifying spatial flow and the ambiguity between inside 

and outside.

- External environment - The external environment is filtered 

through a series

of layers so that harsh extremes are moderated but not eliminated

 by the building.


Materiality-


-Primary materials are recyclable steel and glass.

- industrial steel floor gratings - outer protective layer

- covers the roof assembly

- hinged to form brise-soleil shutters - to reduce glare.

- finished flooring and exterior decking

- recycled wood decking

- supported by conventional lumber.

- Steel structural framework


Technicality-


- primary structural grid and glass curtain wall system,

and was used to proportion the rooms of the house

- Webforge oxidised mild steel industrial grating has a rectangular 

grid.

- Deep steel trusses cantilever approximately 36' (11 m) to

the east and west, from a simple span of 72' (22 m).

- Mild steel is used in different market form throughout the 

structure due to its ductility and ability to be easily welded, cut, etc.



Prefabricated Nature


LOCATION - Cedeira, Spain

Site conditions-


steeply sloped landscape

eucalyptus forest in a remote location in the northeast 

corner.

setting - terrain of row crops, pastures, and pitchedroof houses 

defines the form of the house.




Planning -


- Interior - free-flowing plan

- open to surrounding landscape.

- 6 prefabricated modules -

  • 3 combined - open living space

  • 3 contains - bedroom, bathroom and stairs, kitchen.

connecting space -

  • An attic above - extra sleeping space/play area/exercise room.

views - sea - southwest

- forest - northeast


Materiality -


Perforated COR-TEN weathering steel panels - facade

Poetic sense of the structural design -

CNC- cut - represent the silhouettes of surrounding indigenous 

eucalyptus trees.

weathering steel - represent hardworking steel hulls of fishing boats

- also act as shutters- protection from stormsand intruders.

perforated metal screen- The sunlight maps out the decorative 

tree’s branches onto interior surfaces.


Technicality-


- hybrid of prefabricated modules.

- Modules and roof trusses assembled.

- primary frame - beams and galvanised columns.

- composite steel decking and concrete slabs for

floor decks.
