Types of steel found in markets

Steel is produced in wide variety of types in order to fulfil its usage in different applications. This class was about the different types of Steel Forms available in the market which is discussed further in the blog.

      ANGLE SECTION:

This section looks the alphabet “L”. The angle section can be divided further into 2 types namely equal angle section and unequal angle section based on their legs length. It thickness vary from 20-200mm and it is sold per metre length. Angle section is extensively used in structural work, roof structure and filler joists.

CHANNEL SECTION:

This section resembles the alphabets C and U. C section has flanges with thickness reducing towards the toes where as in U section the flanges are of equal thickness throughout.  It has a vertical element called as the “web” and the two equal horizontal elements called as the “flange” The size varies from 100-400 mm. It is used in roofs and beam supports. As a framing material and as protective edges of walls.

I -SECTION:

These sections have two flanges connected with a web in the centre.  Indian standards classify them as  junior beams, light beams, medium beams, wide-flange beams and heavy beams and they are accordingly designated as I.S.J.B., I.S.L.B., I.S.M.B., I.S.W.B. and I.S.H.B. respectively. Used in floor beams, lintels, columns, etc.

T -SECTION:

This section looks like the alphabet T with a flange having a web attached to the centre.

FLAT BARS:

Used in façade, gate, grill, window, grill etc .  available in varying width 10mm- 400 mm and thickness 3mm- 40 mm.

STEEL PLATE:

These are plates available in 5mm to 50 mm thickness and are used for connecting steel beams, serve as tension members in roof truss.

RIBBED TORSTEEL BARS:

These bars have projection or ribs which adds strength to it. They are also called as High Yield Strength Deformed (HYSD) bars. Used in reinforcement in pile, precast, bridges etc and are available from 6mmto 50 mm diameter.

ROUND BARS / SQUARE BARS:

These are mainly used for non-structural and aesthetic elements like grill, gate, furniture etc. Available in 25 mm dia and 250 mm width.

OTHER TYPES INCLUDE:

·        Corrugated sheet/ GI sheet used in roof covering.

·        Expanded metal – often used as fence, partition and as mesh.

·        Acute section

·        Obtuse section

·        Rail section

·        Trough section

·        Z-section
