" THOUGHTS OF STEEL - STEEL CONNECTIONS"
Hello guys!
Today we discuss “Types of steel connections”.
We are using connections as connecting two different steel or connecting the
beam and column basis. We are going to see when?! Where?! How?! we can use these
connections in structure and some detailed drawings of steel connections. “Riveted,
Bolted and Welded” are the common three steel connections that we have
seen in our regular life.
Riveted connections are generally
used in the older structure, it is more similar to bolted connections. The
rivet is placed into the hole in the steel to join and support, the heat head
of the rivet which helps to prevent the metal from coming out. There’s an
advantage of the rivet is while dismantling of a rivet joint cause less damage when
compared to a welded joint, it can be used for joining ferrous and non-ferrous
metal too, it does have some ability to joint regardless of the location. There are some limitations and disadvantages too like rivet joints are high in cost, the
hole may weak the steel, while construction typically does not makes the tight or
leak-proof joint unless using a hot rivet.
Welded joints are construction basis
joints and they also use on a factory basis
too. There are advantages of welded joints are, it may happen easily with
smooth finishes, need less skilled labor for joining. While welding more noise
may create while constructions are one of the common problems in welded joints.
Bolted connections have some flexibility
in assembling parts of the structure, it is quite easy to fix and remove the
connection for reuse. Instead of braking the steel, removing it is a more sustainable
way to reuse the steel. There’s an advantage of bolted connections, the working
process has been easier and not more skilled labors, this connection
needs lesser working area for constructions and storage. There are some
disadvantages too, bolted connections are costlier like the riveted
connections, due to the heavy vibrations bolts may loosen.
Okay well, we have seen the common joints and
how does it work and benefits of it. Now let us discuss how these joints used
in structure and where and all we can use it. These joints use for a various
connecting purpose like
I.
Beam
to column flange connections
II.
Beam
to beam web connections
III.
Column
to column splice connection
IV.
Column
bases at foundations
V.
Bracing
connections
“Do we have types of connection ? yes we do”
we have ‘n’ number of connections for connecting steel. We will discuss some of
the connections
I.
Pinned
connection
II.
Tie
connection
III.
Tubular
connections
IV.
Taper
connection
V.
Custom
casting
VI.
High
strength connection etc…
That’s all for today, We will continue our journey with a new experience, soon…!
