" THOUGHTS OF STEEL - CASE STUDY 2"

   Hello guys!

Today we discuss case studies of “Trail restroom” of Austin, USA and “Art gallery Henze and Ketterer” of Switzerland. We are going to see the design and material advantages of the projects.

Let’s start with the “Trail restroom” designed by Miro Rivera Architects, Austin, Texas. This trail is located at the linear park of the scenic trail that follows the banks of the Colorado River. This is the first public restroom built in this park in over 30 years of period. The architect wanted to make the structure and material has been blend with the context landscape. So he decided to design with weathering steel called COR-TEN steel which has commonly used as a landscape setting by Plant architect. 49 different size panels have been used for spiral planning and pathway of the restroom. Each panel with 2cm thickness varies in height. The panels in the path have been staggered in plan to control views and light penetration. It also works in direction of fresh air. Stainless steels have used for toilet fixtures like sink, WC, etc… to avoid rust due to water. The material has naturally blended with the surrounding which does look like a dynamic sculpture. (1) (2)

“Art gallery Henze and Ketterer” is designed by Gigon / Guyer architects in Switzerland. This gallery is useful as storage for artwork and able to function as a showroom and the presentation for contemporary art. The above two floors have been used as a gallery, showroom, and storage. The windows on the ground floor which helps to provide natural lighting and ventilation. The roof and cladding of the façade consist of ‘TETRA’ the metal sheet which is commonly used for warehoused and large storage spaces etc… to avoid and control heat and humanity, the insulations have been maximized inside the building. The outer shell curtain of the building acts as screening which helps to reduce direct sunlight and heat (3). The screen has been designed with a perforated sheet. The plan of the building result as a optimize the use of shape. The shape of the building is designed according to the surrounding building context and historic idea. (3)
