SUSTAINABILITY OF STEEL
IS STEEL SUSTAINABLE?
WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?
Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources. It is based on three concepts- economic, environmental, and social.
IS STEEL SUSTAINABLE? YES.
WHY?
Steel is a sturdy industrial and construction material used as both structural and decorative material in architecture. It is one of the eco-friendly building materials.
The important quality of steel, which makes it more sustainable is its ENDLESS RECYCLABILITY. Steel can be recycled without losing its strength and durability. Steel constructions and steel-framed buildings can be dismantled, and the metal reused. Even cut pieces and rejected components can easily be recycled after fabrication. This infinite recyclability without loss of
properties, combined with its strength, versatility,
availability and affordability make steel unique.
Steel has a long service life. at the end of the service life, the steel structure is just as easy to dismantle as it was to construct. The easy dismantling makes steel ideally suitable for temporary buildings.
Several environmentally friendly system types are available for protecting steel, including several coating system types, duplex systems (galvanizing + coating), and hot sprayed aluminum.
Steel has an essential role to play in this
transition and sustaining a green economy. Building with steel involves the low use of raw materials . The use of stronger steels enables a further reduction in the quantity of material needed per structural element.
Steel is industrially produced under controlled conditions. There is little or no construction waste. By-products such as blast furnace slag cement and gas can be reused. Continuous innovation in production techniques and methods has provided a permanent reduction in energy used and emissions.
No damage to humans and the environment. Steel releases no harsh chemicals or toxins that are hazardous. steel buildings have the following benefits-Less waste onsite, Safer construction, Less community disruption, Smaller Jobsite footprint, Less pollution from heavy machinery and onsite fabrication activities.
Hence, steel is a sustainable building material.
