MARKET FORMS OF STEEL
STEEL is available in variety of forms in market depending on the use, function and location of the product.
ANGLE SECTIONS
The angle sections are divided into two as equal angle and unequal angle sections.
Equal angle sections range from 20mm to 200mm in size.
Unequal angle sections range from 30mm to 200mm in size. These are used in the structural steel roof and filer joist floor.
CHANNEL SECTIONS (structural member )
These sections have two parts namely web ( vertical member )
and flange ( horizontal member ).
There will be 1 web and 2 flanges in a channel section.
The size varies from 100mm to 400mm
CORRUGATED SHEETSThese sheets are produced by passing steel sheets through grooves to get the texture. These are majorly used in the roof coverings and they are generally galvanized ( zinc coated ).
EXPANDED METAL
These sheets are made from mild steel which is machine cut.
They have a diamond mesh appearance.
Expanded metal sheets can be used in the partitions,
reinforcing concrete in foundation, road, floor, etc.
FLAT BARS
These are flat as the name suggests and does not have any pattern or corrugation on them. The size ranges from 3mm to 10mm. They are used for grill works for window and gate.
These are rolled steel joists or beams which provides structural stability to a building. The I sections can be used in columns, lintels, floor beams, etc. They have 2 flanges and 1 web. If the flange is wide, they are known as H beams. The size varies from 75mm to 600mm.
I.S.J.B Indian Standard Junior Beam
I.S.L.B Indian Standard Light Beam
I.S.M.B Indian Standard Medium Beam
I.S.H.B Indian Standard High Beam
These are the types of I sections available for different used in the building in different locations.
PLATES
These are steel members which connects the steel beams for the extension of length. These plates are also used as the tensional member of steel in truss roofing. The size range varies from 5mm to 50mm.
RIBBED TORSTEEL BARS ( structural member )
The bars are deformed high strength steel ( HSS ). They are produced by cold twisting the hot rolled bars. These bars provide structural support to the building. They are used in bridges, harbor structure, road, foundations, and most generally in pre cast concrete works. The diameter varies from 6mm to 50mm.
ROUND BARS ( structural member )
These are plain bars used as reinforcement in steel grillwork and also in concrete sections. The size varies from 5mm to 250 mm.
SQUARE BARS
They are similar to round bars except for the fact that these are square sections. The size range is from 5mm to 250mm.
HOLLOW STRUCTURAL SECTION
These are hollow sections either square or rectangular. The sections can be hot rolled and galvanized. Though these sections are hollow inside, they perform well when it comes to strength and durability.
INTRODUCTION TO AESS
We also had a basic introduction on what AESS mean and how it is used in today's world. AESS is Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel. These are purposefully exposed to show the aesthetic nature of the material. These carry the structural load of the building and also resist shear and moment. Some challenges are faced when AESS is used which includes cost, craftmanship, and a proper detail on how the connections are made, etc.
