BLOG 12 - TRAIL RESTROOMS AND ART GALLERY

Last class, we came across a few case studies where steel is used as the major element in the design. The case studies were from outside India and the case studies were based on the river valley. They used steel as a base element to withstand the structure.

CASE STUDY 1: Lady Bird Lake Hiking Trailrooms, Austin.

The trail restroom runs along the banks of the Colorado River. The aim was to create a sculpture and as a landmark for the nearby restrooms.

In this structure, steel was used as a base element, and especially CORTEN STEEL was used for roof, door, and for cladding. The structure looks like a freestanding structure where the steel panels are placed in a free-standing manner. The plates are arranged in such a way that it blocks the view for privacy. The vertical steel plates connect the foundation and the roof, which is the CORTEN STEEL ROOF. The combination of copper, chromium, and nickel makes the mild steel stronger and corrosion-resistant. 19 mm thick steel plates of varied width were used in trail restrooms.

CASE STUDY 2:Kunst-Depot, Henze & Ketterer Art Gallery.

This place is used for art storage and as a showroom. It has two floors which are used for storage and as a gallery space. The floor plate is simple and open. In this structure corrugated steel sheet is used for both roof and cladding. The outer surface of the structure is a curtain wall that acts as a sunscreen. They used rectangular metal roof sheets and folded by the edges. Irregular sheets were used to incorporate the vernacular style of farmhouses. To protect the wall from the weather and to increase the sunshade second layer of perforated steel is used. The profile of the material is a vertically striped pattern that covers the whole surface.
