BLOG 11: MARKET FORMS OF STEEL

Market forms of steel

Steel sections are available in many forms. There are standard shapes in steel sections which comes under ISJC, ISLC, ISMC.

The standard shapes are listed down below

1.      Angle sections

2.      Channel sections

3.      Corrugated sheets

4.      Expanded metal

5.      Flat bars

6.      I-sections

7.      Plates

8.      Ribbed tor steel bars

9.      Round bars

10.   Square bars

11.   T-sections

·        Angle section:  There are two types of angle sections

(i)               Equal angles: It is available in different sizes

20x20x3mm per meter length – 9N

200X200X25mm per meter length – 736N

(ii)              Unequal angles

·        Channel section: It consists of a web with two flanges. According to the Indian standards. The channels sections are classified into ISJC, ISLC, ISMC.

·        Corrugated Sheets: These types of sheets are done where steel sheets are passed through grooves and corrugations are formed. These sheets are mostly used for roofing.

·        Expanded metal: It is available in different shapes and sizes. The appearance of steel is diamond mesh. The expanded metal is used in foundations, partitions, floors.

·        Flat Bars: They are available in different sizes

                   10-400mm width

                   3- 40mm thickness

These bars are mostly used in grill works, windows, sections.

·        I- sections: They are called as beams. It consists of two flanges connected by a web. They are classified into ISJB, ISLB, ISMB, ISWB, ISHB. They are used in columns, lintel, floor beams.

It is available in different sizes

             75x50mm at 61N

             600x210mm at 995N

·        Plates: They are generally used in structural steelwork. It is available in sizes

5mm to 50 mm thickness.

·        Ribbed Tor steel bars: These bars are mostly used in hot steel process. It is available in a 6mm or 8mm diameter. These bars are used in constructing bridges, docks, harbors, and structure.

·        Round bars: They are available in 5mm thickness and used in reinforcement in steel grillwork, concrete sections.

·        Square bars: They are available in the square cross-section with 5mm to 250mm width. They are used in steel grillwork, windows, gates.

·        T sections: It consists of flange and web, and it is available in 2x20x3mm and 150x150x10mm

Other than this we have acute, obtuse, rail sections, trough sections, Z-sections.

Next, we had a discussion on the term AESS (Architecturally exposed structural steel). AESS is exposed, and it is a part of aesthetics in architecture. It requires care than structural steel, it includes details and finishes. AESS is selected based on the viewing distance. It differentiates the high and low AESS category. AESS and steel differ in scale, function, surface treatment, and joinery details.[I]
