 Vizag Steel Plant is the only Indian shore-based steel plant and is situated on 33,000 acres (13,000 ha), and is poised to expand to produce up to 20 MT in a single campus. Turnover in 2011-2012 was Rs 14,457 crores.   ON 20 May 2009, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched the expansion project of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant from a capacity of 3.6 MT to 6.3 MT at a cost of Rs. 8,692 crores.

SOURCE:

Iron ore to the steel plant is sourced from the Bailadila mines of NMDC through the K-K line 335 km away from the steel plant. The plant needs 5-10 rakes of iron ore daily to maintain its present production levels.

INFRASTUCTURE

 

On 13 June 2012, 19 people died during a trial run of recently commissioned oxygen plant, due to a massive explosion in the plant. Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma visited and announced 20 lakh  Ex gratia to each person.

 

Eight people were killed in a major explosion and fire that broke

out at the state-owned Vizag steel plant, security sources said.

The explosion occurred at the oxygen control unit near the Steel Melting Shop at the plant of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), sources at the plant said.

A technical problem at the unit was suspected to be the cause for the mishap. Sources said the explosion could have been caused due to abnormal build up of pressure in the unit.

Around 15 persons were injured in the accident and almost all of them were in a critical condition, sources said.

Security sources at the plant said eight people lost their lives in the mishap.

Vizag police commissioner Purnachandra Rao said six bodies were recovered from the site of the explosion.

The injured have been admitted to the Steel Plant's General Hospital

OTHER ACCIDENTS:

·         In June 2014, two engineers were fatally injured in a suspected case of Carbon monoxide poisoning.

·         On 7 Nov 2014, a minor explosion occurred in the Blast Furnace II but there were no casualties.

·         In February 2015, an assistant general manager was involved in a fatal accident when he fell into a rotating drum.

·         On 18 January 2019, a hot metal pipe was exploded in Blast furnace number 3. There were no casualties.
