STEEL AND SUSTAINABILITY ???
IS STEEL SUSTAINABLE?
Hi again. We were discussing on the topic of steel sustainability, the other day. Lets see what we discussed and what conclusion I have.
STEEL CAN BE SUSTAINABLE, SINCE :
It can be recycled. Once made, it can be used forever. It can be recycled n number of times. There will be no downgrading in quality.
The resources (minerals and fossil fuels) used to make steel are not wasted.
Its life cycle is endless.
Very little energy is used to produce it.
The waste produced by it is reusable.
It is not toxic to humans or environment.
Before getting into the conclusion, lets see how the material reacts with fire.
STEEL AND FIRE :
The material is non combustible.
When it reacts with fire, the material loses its strength. The structural property and its yield strength is decreased. Since steel has high thermal conductivity, it can transform the heat to other structural members easily and spread it. A steel structural member can easily collapse when its subjected to the critical value.
Thus, to prevent heat or fire, insulating materials are generally given. A new invention of Fire resistant steel has also come into use.
As a conclusion, steel is SUSTAINABLE. It is certified under the Green Buildings Rating System such as International Green Construction Code (IGCC ) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ( LEED ).
Thanks.
Bye.
