BLOG ENTRY 1
Steel.
When we first think about steel, the words that come to mind are,
Strong, flexible, parametric, support, reliable, an expression of the colour red?
Much like a character from The Incredibles,
Elastic girl maybe?
The first class started with a story-telling presentation, mapping out the evolution of steel. A journey from a metal to a building material, over different time periods from prehistoric period, a time before written records, with Bronze Age, Stone Age and Iron Age, to modern day where steel, concrete and glass are primarily used in the construction of different structures after the industrial revolution spiking a mass production of these materials.
Over a general classification of metals, Aluminium, copper, lead, brass were specified under non-ferrous metals (metals which do not have iron as a component in their chemical composition) while wrought iron, cast iron, steel, stainless steels were specified under ferrous metals (metals having iron in their chemical composition). Steel undergoes a lot of processes to have different properties and material uses. The different processes include, Casting, Drawing, Extruding, Rolling and Forging.
Steel has evolved from just a basic metal used in the old ages as a weapon for survival to a structural material ( AESS – Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel) in the present age.
This theoretical subject was taken in a fun and interactive approach, with exciting activities in the books, like making a spin wheel using household materials.
Looking forward to more flexible, collective learning sessions!
