Blog 6: WEATHER CONDITIONS AFFECT STEEL
WEATHER CONDITIONS AFFECT STEEL
Last class, we discussed how does the weather affect the steel in terms of construction material
Yes, it affects mostly in construction and marine field.

The weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, and solar radiation affect the steel.
When steel is open to the air for a long period, it starts corroding.
As we see temperature will cause contraction or expansion of the material and solar radiation increases, the temperature thereby leads to expansion. Both humidity and precipitation lead to corrosion.
Heat causes steel to expand and cooling causes steel to contract. Similarly, it happens in hot weather and cold weather.
Extreme hot weather will have an expansion problem with the steel structures during the assembling of steel buildings.
Cold weather will have a contraction problem with steel structures.
Preheating the metal before welding is one way of controlling expansion and contraction. It is especially important when welding tubular structures and castings.
Yet to be continued....
