STEEL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

 STEEL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

HELLO! to everyone reading this. This is my first blog ever!!!!

WE were asked to write a blog about the elective class that happened yesterday in online. So to begin with,

WHY did I choose steel as my elective?

when I skimmed through the syllabus of the three subjects , Steel seemed interesting than the other two (contemporary building materials and glass architecture and design). 'STEEL', a well-known material known to us.  It has become a quintessential constructional material for both structural and non- structural purposes.

As a student of architecture, I have learned about the very basics of steel construction. I wanted to use this opportunity to learn more about its construction techniques, usage,  its role as a sustainable material, etc.

The introduction to the material was given from the prehistoric period. The time period before the invention of scripted language is known as the prehistoric period. It consists of the stone age, bronze age, and the iron age. The use of metals in the prehistoric period was less and in smaller quantities. Generally, metals are classified into two types: FERROUS (iron) and NON-FERROUS metals( aluminium, copper, lead, etc.).

STEEL is a form of iron. It is manufactured through various processes. The five basic terminologies that one should know in the manufacturing process are CASTING, ROLLING, DRAWING, FORGING, EXTRUDING.

I also learned about AESS which stands for Architectural Exposed Structural Steel. They are widely used in today's commercial construction. The transition from the iron age to AESS shows the evolution in the field of construction and architecture.

so finally to conclude this, I would like to share a question that popped in my head.

we all know the major role of steel in commercial buildings. But what about the residential buildings? can't steel be a major construction material for residences? other than structural purposes, grills, this and openings. steel is not suitable for the Indian climate. but,

IS THERE A WAY TO  USE STEEL SUSTAINABLY IN RESIDENCES DESPITE THE CLIMATIC FACTORS OF OUR COUNTRY?

okay, I'm done. thank you for reading.
