Hello all, this blog will be narrating the process of how Steel members are actually converted into a building structure on site after its cut, treated and coated i.e., Fabrication and Erection.

Fabrication is the process of making the steel members better and functional by treating it and coating it with the required precision and quality. It can be done on site of erection or it can be done on a seperate site/ factory as per the requirements of particular temperature or humidity standards for quality work.

Major details that has to be taken care of, while fabricating members are as follows:-

  • Transportation issues
  • Site Constraints
  • Erection Issues
  • Sequencing of Lifts
  • Waterproofing and Fireproofing
  • Care in handling

Erection is simply the assembling of different steel members on site to achieve the desired structure. It involves lifting and placing components into position and connecting them together.

Erection Consideration should cater to the following details :-

  • The distance between the site of fabrication and site of erection. Less, the better.
  • This corresponds to the loss in quality of members during transportation.
  • The height of fitting the members with the available labor.
  • The area in front of the structure that should accommodate the members. More, the better.
  • This corresponds to storing the delivered members and space for working.
  • Easily available and cheap equipment (or advanced) for erecting the members on site.
  • Design and time - Simple and familiar the structure, faster the erection.

Hybrid Construction

The process of designing structures with a composition of different materials in a particular member is called hybrid construction. Here, the spotlight is on composition of Steel with wood and glass.

Material Study plays a major role while designing hybrid structures. This study should include the following particulars:-

  • Dead load and live load
  • Wind load and height levels
  • Solar Gain of the material
  • Energy Consumption and Cooling load
  • Movement
  • Filler material

In the case of Steel, Wood and Glass, the major factors that govern other factors are as follows:-

  • On one side, Steel is tensile, strong, predictable and is manufactured accordingly. It cannot resist temperature and humidity.
  • On the other hand, Wood is compressive, weak and vulnerable. It is natural. It cannot resist termites and humidity.
  • In the case of Glass, it is for visual aspect, transparency. It should have minimum connections and the importance is give to alignment and finish.

Functions and Applications of Hybrid Construction

  • Wind bracing - Repetitive units at regular intervals
  • For Structural Skeletal Sections that supports the building.
  • Can be useful in trusses and Cable system.
  • It can be a major part in Interstitial Support system.

The different types of Connections used to connect different materials despite different thicknesses and character are as follows :-

  • Spider bracket
  • Single bracket
  • Angle bracket
  • Clamping devices
  • Clipping devices
  • Steel cables
Some examples for Hybrid Connections are as follows:-
