The process of Cutting plays a major role in construction, especially for steel. It comes before hand joinery, connections and finishes. Better the cut, less the wastage. Designing the process of cutting itself is so interesting to observe. Here, a set of cutting instruments/ equipment along with different methods of cutting is showcased along with the data required to choose which cutting is suitable for which product required.
Cutting in straight lines and orthogonal 2D geometric figures is very easy, when it comes to curves and angles, there are a certain things that are added to this consideration list. Some of them are the axis of strength in that particular section that has to be cut. Its easy to cut in its weaker axis and its hard to cut in its stronger axis. The fact that the direction of cut, if it is perpendicular or parallel to the axis of the axis of strength of the member matters.
This is where the Central point of Yield strength, Centroid in any possible 2D surface, etc comes to play. With the use of it, the axis of strength and weakness is figured out and worked out on cutting accordingly.
Once the cutting is perfect, we can proceed with using these members in the structure wherever required, by connections and finishes as discussed in the previous blogs.
