ABOUT:

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), in Rourkela, Odisha is the first integrated steel plant in the public sector in India. It was set up with West Germany collaboration with an installed capacity of 1 million tonnes in the 1960s. It is operated by Steel Authority of India.


German metallurgical firms Mannesmann, Krupp, Demag, Siemens and Austrian company Voestalpine[4] provided machinery and consultancy to the plant among others. Rourkela Steel Plant was the first steel plant in Asia to use the LD (Linz-Donawitz) process of steel-making.


ACCIDENT:

Rourkela:  Tension prevailed at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) after a labourer sustained critical burn injuries in a mishap on the plant premises on Saturday.

According to reports, a ladle containing around 150 tonne hot liquid metal snapped off a crane and fell on the labourer identified as Sahil Kumar Purti.

The incident occurred when Sahil was working in the steel melting shop (SMS-II) at the RSP. Following the mishap, Sahil was rushed to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) and is reportedly undergoing treatment in the ICU. He has sustained over 70 per cent burn injuries, medical sources said.

A day after a labourer sustained critical burn injuries in a mishap at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), another fire mishap was reported in the steel melting shop (SMS-II) on the plant premises on Sunday after hot liquid metal spilled out of a ladle.

Sources said the mishap occurred around 10.30 am when  Crane No.3 A was carrying the ladle filled with liquid hot metal to the Converter-C of the SMS-II. Due to fault in the crane’s coupling, the ladle automatically got lowered and spilled the liquid hot metal on the floor and generated heat and fire. Fortunately, no one was present at the site.
