Market forms of steel blog11
There
are a range of rolled steel available in the construction industry, the
variations lie in terms of size, properties and shape.
According
to the World Steel Association, steel primarily comprises of iron, carbon,
manganese and traces of oxygen, phosphorous, sulphites and silicon. Due to
which, Steel is a key element in the construction industry because of its
durability, strength and versatility.
Steel,
in general, has a wide array of applications and various types of steel
products are available in the industry including structural steel, cold-rolled
steel, hot-rolled steel, steel plates, steel wire rope and galvanized steel.
1. Structural Steel
Structural Steel is a predominant material used in the construction industry and is popular for constructing tunnels, road barriers, bridges, apartments and towers. Structural Steels are popular because of their low weight, ease of use, uniformity and increased strength.
Steel can be combined with concrete to form reinforced cement concrete i.e. RCC which gives increased strength. Concrete and steel both have similar expansion properties due to which RCC is extensively popular.
Structural steel comprises of manganese, copper, aluminium, iron and carbon which increases its weldability, ductility, ability to withstand corrosion and bear
2. Cold-rolled Steel
Cold rolled steel
is used where concentricity, tolerance and surface condition are imperative.
Cold rolled steel is nothing but hot rolled steel processed in mills used for
cold reduction. This method increases tensile power and durability. It also
provides a smooth surface finish.
3. Hot-rolled Steel
Within the building and construction industry, steel needs to be shaped and formed in rather large sizes and that could be achieved by hot rolled coils. Hot rolled coils are formed by a mill process where steel is rolled at temperatures exceeding 1600 F. At such a high temperature, steel becomes malleable and is suitable for producing structural or sectional modules.
4. Steel Plates
Steel plates vary
depending on usability and application i.e. steel plates needed by smaller
constructions are different that the ones needed by towers and high-rise
apartments. Steel plates can be made in a wide array of sizes and quality. The
thickness of steel plates usually ranges from 5mm to 200mm. Their properties
include corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance and tensile power as well.
5. Steel Wire Rope
A steel wire comprises of strands of thinly woven wires around a steel core in a helix pattern. It is used in moving heavy objects and large loads in a restricted manner. It also is used in moving lifts, up and down. In construction of high-rises and suspension bridges, steel wires provide core support, flexibility and absorb stresses.
Steel wire ropes
are also popularly used because their properties are varied. They offer extreme
resistance to rotation, are very slow in terms of the corrosion process and
bear fatigue and crushing well. They are also known for being able to provide
durability against abrasion.
