“How climate condition affects steel?”

   Hey guys…!

Today I’m going to talk about “How climate the condition affects steel?” we’re going to take a look at how steel rust according to the climate condition of locality and example of how it reacts and some preventions for it.

Let's start from “What if steel reacts with rainy locality?” When metal and water combine, it results in rust which is what many people might think when talking about rain and near-by water bodies. Rust may form from the reaction between oxygen and steel/ iron reacts with water and oxygen or air containing high levels of moisture. The low temperature can adversely affect the tensile strength. Other than moisture some factor may affect the steel

        I.            When steel reacts with acids it may quickly tend to rust, higher pH may inhibit the corrosion of iron

II.            Due to the salt content in the air or near-by sea may tend steel to rust.

III.            Impurity of air also affect the steel, it may tend to rust the steel.

For example, the sinking of the titanic is not because of only the iceberg crash, it also because of the composition of the steel for the cold temperature. Steel became brittle when it was exposed to the cold water and brittle. The steel can easily break/ fractured quicker than when it reacts with warmer temperature.

“How can we prevent steel from rusting?” some steels are naturally not rusted easily like stainless steel and weathering steel. COR-TEN steel (weathering construction steel) which is slowly rusted when compared to other steel materials. The rust from the protective layer prevents corrosion. Some other prevention has also been taken to prevent rust and corrosion like the galvanization process, cathodic protection and coating process, etc...

                    I.            Galvanization the process is applying a layer of zinc in steel or iron, it has been done by an electroplating method. The major con’s of this process is the zinc layer is eaten up in the process and it is not effective in high corrosive space.

II.            In cathodic protection, the electric charge has been provided with metal/ steel which helps to inhibit the reaction between chemical reactions which tends to rust.

III.            Coating can be applied to the surface of the exposed metal, for example, paints wax tape etc… it is more sufficient than the galvanization process.

“How steel reacts with hot climate?” when too much of heats occur, steel tends to react with it easily. Steel also reacts with electric and magnetic fields too. When steel reacts with hot temperatures, the metal may expand (length, surface area, and volume may increase). Household pipes can be accurate expansion and contraction as the season's change.
