(1) Front elevation 


Site conditions -


setting -  historical gathering place for the people of Osaka

Abundance of trees

Important landmark - local and tourist attarction 


Concept -


- Not fully enclosed - simultaneously

open (for convenience) and closed (for privacy).

- Artfull presence suiting the environment of the park - Disguising its banal purpose. 

- Interesting ''Tent-like'' structure. 

- Contrasting expressions of the interior and exterior setting. 


Planning - 


- Entrances are not defined

- Closed compartments not touching the roof- enabling air flow into the interior space. 

- Spaces designed in between fixed ofjects. 


Materiality - 


- Monolithic structural system

- Weathering steel plates

                                - used in the roof, joinery details and walls. 

                                - Rusted surface blends into the environment. 

- Connections - welded connections. 

- Steel alloy - passive barrier protecting from atmospheric corrosion. 

- Interior space -  glistening porcelain, stone,

and metal finishes.


Technicality- 


-  thick steel plates welded into a single plane using continuous welds. 

- Catenary curved form of the roof (like a hanging chain/ cable) - suspended on its on weight and supported at the ends ( Trianglulated COR-TEN steel plates) 


Artists’ Studios in Aberystwyth

LOCATION - Wales, UK
ARCHITECT - Heatherwick Studio

Site conditions - 


- Wooded site 

- Project is placed amongst the trees 


Design intention - 


low-cost facilities for sixteen start-up arts organizations for the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. 


Concept - 


- shed-like studio spaces 

- organised around a common entryway.

- simple timber frame split down in the middle to bring in more ventilation.


(3) Concept 


Materiality - 


Stainless steel sheet metal - 

- intentionally crinkling the thin foil prior to installation

- Flexible and has structural integrity. 

- Thin yet durable and resistant to weather

spray foam - 

To achieve the rigidity needed for durable cladding - applied to the inner face of the foil after it was installed.


Technicality -


-  Eight buildings - elevated off the sloping site by

fifteen concrete piers.

-  light wood-frame construction

-  stainless-steel cladding - seamless overlapping of giant peices of metal.

- reflective, polished metal exterior - reduce all forms of heat transmission.

- polyurethane foam - sprayed on the inner surface of the cladding - designs a cavity conceals this irregularity behind a vertical plane of interior gypsum and wood studs.
