Shaping and Finishes of Steel - Blog 5 - Yukta Yogeesh

Today's session was so much learning. Major topics that we covered were processes involved in shaping of steel and different types of finishes.
Reminded of the first session when this topic of shaping popped up. Recollecting Forging, rolling, etc
Types of Steel Sections are hot rolled sections and cold rolled sections. We started the session with a question raising the parameters that affect the appearance/ corrosive property of steel. Yes, majorly those dealing with the climatic conditions, especially the ones near the sea due to the increasing amount of salt and silt in the water and in the marine humid zones where the structure is so prone to moisture that it might corrode so easily.
Some major climatic/ whether parameters are rain/precipitation, temperature, humidity, winds etc.
Temperature - If it is high, steel might contract and expand accordingly due time.
Precipitation - Steel, if not treated, if drenched in water for long, will lose its properties and go in vein.
Humidity - Corrosion is the most adversely affected of all the parameters mentioned here.
Wind - The structures near shores will face winds that has heavy salt content in it So, protective coating should be a must of all the steel structures to make it a better one to withstand whether/climate.
The appearance of the steel manufactured is affected by its corrosive property. Some different methods of protecting it from getting corroded are painting, galvanisation and chemical treatment.
'Costly' Stainless steel - finishes -
1. Electropolishing - Allows to reduce the surface roughness
2. Electrolytic cooling - Superficial film of 0.02micro m-0.36micro m (comes in different colors - Red, Bronze, Gold, Purple, etc)
3. Burnishing - Addition of Sodium dichromate, which doesn't flake. It gives a matt black color finish. This can further be treated with oil/ wax to make it shiny/ glossy
4. Acid Etching - Patterns to fill acid and rest is exposed steel
5. Painting - To improve visibility (pre painted sheet/ coil) - not that affective
6. Enamelling - Coated with ceramic/ baked high temperatures giving a vitrified finish
7. Physical Vapor Deposition - Gold/ Bronze/ Rose Gold/ Blue/ Black/ Burgundy
When being heated in a furnace, the atoms gets deposited forming a thin uniform layer of protection.
8. Metallic Coating - Coating with another metal like copper or tin.
