This blog is about a report on JSW steel plant located in
Vijayanagar, Karnataka, India.
It It was established in the year 1994 and located in the Ballari-Hospete
iron ore belt covering up to 10,000-acres. JSW Steel, formerly known as Jindal
Vijayanagar Steel Ltd. (JVSL), is a flag ship company of Jindal group of
industries. This integrated steel plant at Toranagallu is currently the
largest, most modern, and technologically efficient, eco-friendly integrated
steel plant in India. JSW Steel, Vijayanagar is currently rated as the sixth best
integrated steel plant in the world. It houses India’s widest hot strip mill
and one of India’s largest blast furnaces. It is well-connected to both Goa and
Chennai ports.
The assessment of environmental impact proposed changes:
•
No increase of pollution emissions in respect of
PM10, SO2& NOx. Monitors and regulators to be checked on a regular basis
• No impact on fresh water consumption from Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers. introduction of several water reuse / recycle technologies to reduce the specific water consumption.
• No impact on Land environment by planting more tress in the site and surroundings in order to increase the green cover and also to control pollution and air quality of the surrounding regions.
JSW Steel had a sudden release of
pressure resulted in a huge sound at the plant. The company added that the
plant is safe and issued the clarification after media reports suggested that
there was an accident at the steel plant at Vijayanagar works of JSW Steel in December
2014.
PRODUCTS:
JSW offers a wide gamut of steel products that
include Hot Rolled, Cold Rolled, Billets, Bare & Pre-Painted Galvanised
& Galvalume , TMT Rebars, Wire Rods and Special Steel. SW is in
collaboration with JFE Steel Corp. Japan, for manufacturing high strength &
advanced high strength steel for automobile sector.
APPLICATION IN AUTOMOBILE
INDUSTRY:
India is emerging as the global
auto industry’s favourite manufacturing destination, cutting-edge steel
products are fuelling its success. Lightweight, cost-effective and fuel-efficient
vehicles are the future. JSW Steel have been working hand-in-hand with the auto
sector to realize this vision.
SUSTAINABILITY:
It has a low carbon footprint, with 96% of coke oven gas for
power generation being recycled. Recognised for its ‘zero-effluent discharge’
status; reuses more than 95 per cent of process waste. To get the best out of
waste JSW has slime recovery project along with micropelletisation in order to
reduce the solid waste generated.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT:

ACCIDENTS:
Another accident occurred in 2012
when hot iron ore residue from on overhead iron bucket fell on the victims while cleaning a huge bunker of JSW plant. The buckets restrains broke leading
to the accident. Union leaders said that the plant lacked proper maintenance
over that year causing this accident.
