Manufacture and properties of steel blog2

 Before getting into the preparation of steel , let us know some basic terminologies,

  • alloy-combination of two or more metals
  • rock-aggregate of minerals
  • ore-naturally occurring solid material from which metal can be extracted

Steel can be manufactured in two methods,

  • oxygen process
  • electric arc furnace
In the oxygen process, oxygen is let into a furnace containing raw materials and pig iron
In electric arc furnace process,carbon electrodes are used and electric arc reaction between anode and cathode results with the raw materials helps in the formation of high quality of steel

Less compression, tension strength, ductility and hardness are the important properties of steel
Necking- Signage of breakage or crack occur in steel
Elastic point-extends and return to its original stage
Plastic stage- beyond certain point the steel may break and cannot regain its shape

To measure and know about the strength of the steel, hardness test has to taken before being installed or taken for construction, universally used test are Rockwell test, Brinell test and Vicker test.
