Iron to steel making process blog4
Iron ore to steel
Basic oxygen furnace
- Iron ore and limestone is sent into a sinter plant to make into a fine component
- Coal is passed through coal ovens to make it suitable
- Then the components form the sinter plant and coal ovens are let into blast furnace where the high quality oxygen is blown through the metal at high temperature, the oxygen combines with the metals and come out as steel
- Then the steel passes through the ladle where the carbon content is lowered
Electric arc furnace
- Iron ore, limestone and scrap metal are the raw materials used in the electric arc furnace
- In the furnace the reaction between anode and cathode creates arc and high quality steel is made.
- Then the steel passes through the ladle where the carbon content is lowered
The steel is then reheated and rolled to make it into desirable shape used in construction
