Introduction to Steel - Blog 1

I never imagined that I would be writing a blog ever in my life, but here I am totally clueless of how and what I should be writing further

So here it is!!

Today, being the first class of our elective subject “Steel Architecture and Design” we were asked why we chose this subject, that’s when I realised I knew nothing about steel structures which clearly gives a justification for me to learn and know more about steel in architecture.
Also living in “India”, we come across a wide variety of construction which use materials like brick, cement, concrete etc. and finding structures made using steel is a rare sight , this made me more curious towards steel as an opportunity to explore more about it.

The word “Steel” is an ocean which has its traces in the field of construction for more than 70 years or even more as steel goes down leaving its traces to Iron which is even older.

Today’s class was an introduction of the basic metals and their understanding, starting off with metals used in pre historic period, how they came into usage and their evolution from stone to iron, cement, concrete and glass. Classification of metals into Ferrous and Non Ferrous metals.

The transition from historic materials to AEES (Architecturally Exposed Structural steel) how it was possible, the pros and cons of steel in construction were discussed along with the manufacturing processes like Casting, Forging, Rolling, Extruding and Drawing.

Looking forward to learn more in the upcoming classes.
