DAY 3 - STEEL SHAPING AND FINISHES

After the process of converting IRON to STEEL, we were brought into the topic of how steel is shaped and also about the FINISHES.

Weather conditions affecting the material was also a part of the topic discussed .

Starting with the two types of sections -
                  
                THE HOT ROLLED SECTIONS and THE COLD ROLLED SECTIONS.

As the word says, HOT ROLLED SECTIONS are made at high temperature. This process is done to get the precise shape .
Whereas, COLD ROLLED SECTIONS don't require a high temperature. These can be made in room temperature and is said to be stronger than HOT ROLLED SECTIONS.

Coming into other methods,

   COLD HARDENING is done to make the metal strong by hammering or compressing.
   QUENCHING involves heating the metal at a high temperature and cooling it rapidly, therefore making the metal strong and brittle.
   TEMPERING is a process that toughens the steel, and reduces its brittleness to increase its strength and ductility.
   ANNEALING is done to soften a metal. It involves heating the metal above the critical temperature and cooling it down slowly.
   GALVANIZATION involves applying zinc coating to prevent the metal from rusting. It is done in two methods - 
               HOT DIPPED GALVANIZATION and COLD DIPPED METHOD  

Following which, APPEARANCE and PREVENTION OF CORROSION was briefed about, involving PAINT, GALVANIZATION and CHEMICALS.
Prevention involved spraying making the metal fireproof , enclosing with gypsum layers and encasing steel in concrete.

The final part of this session involved the finishes of steel.

Electropolishing 
Electrolytic coloring
Burnishing 
Acid Etching
Painting 
Enameling
Physical vapor deposition
Metallic coating.

Locations also play a role in the corrosion occurrence such as marine and coastal areas.

With this the session came to an end.
